Three middle school girls and I conducted a youth action research project focused on investigating how, where, and why their out-of-school knowledge has informed their participation in a community and equity-oriented STEM-makerspace. I will share how their out-of-school knowledge supported their STEM-maker learning and engagement, the pedagogical and design approaches which best leverage upon these powerful forms of knowledge, and the recommendations these insights provide for other makerspaces, both in and out of school.
